Abstract

Saphire crystal is widely used as a substrate materials for semiconductor,
superconductor and metallic layers. Incorporation of carbon atoms into cationic or anionic sites may modify its properties. In the Al-C-O system two ternary compounds are known: Al2 CO and Al4 O4 C. For Al2 CO two polimorphs: α and α'
have been reported. The polimorph α-Al2 CO crystallizes in wurtzite structure
with a=3.170 A and c=5.078 A the structure of α'-Al2 CO is not fully understood yet. In this paper we suggest crystal structure for α'-Al2 CO
obtained by use of different optimisation methods. The proposed structure is consistent with X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results.
