Abstract

Extraction by ion exchange is one of the most known methods of radioactive waste treatment. The main problem of this method is that after the extraction process, the exchanger must be backwashed to convert the radioactive waste into the form suitable for immobilization. This leads to the formation of great volumes of secondary aqueous solutions. The exclusion of this stage from the process will make it safer and environmentally friendly. The polyantimonic acid and its derivatives are well known ion-exchangers. Besides that, some of mixed oxides containing antimony adopt pyrochlore structure that makes it possible to use them for immobilization. New process for the treatment of radioactive waste consisting of extraction and immobilization in the same crystalline matrix based on mixed antimony oxide are presented in this report.
